Frequently Asked Questions
From writing habits to character choices, here are Maria’s honest answers to the questions she gets asked the most.
Writing & Process
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: Everywhere! Books, magazines, TV, plays, strangers on the street… Everything I experience goes into a mental notebook I draw from. I always advise writers to get out in the world—take classes, talk to people, stay curious. I don’t lack ideas—just time!
Q: How long does it take you to write a book?
A: These days, about 7–9 months per book. Poison Study took me 5 years (I had little kids!), but now that I write full time, I’ve found a good rhythm.
Q: Do you outline or plot your books first?
A: Nope—I’m a “pantser.” I start with a general idea of where the book might end, but I discover the twists and turns as I go. That way, I get surprised by my characters… which usually means readers will be, too!
Q: When and where do you write?
A: I’m a night owl. Most of my writing happens between 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. I work in a cherrywood writing room built by my husband—with built-in bookshelves, a custom desk, and a few props (and weapons!) nearby to help me act out scenes.
Q: What’s the easiest and hardest part of writing for you?
A: Easiest? Dialogue—I love writing character banter. Hardest? Describing emotions without clichés and getting in enough detail. When I find the right phrase, it’s like hitting the lottery.
Q: What’s your best advice for new writers?
A: Be persistent. Don’t give up. Finish your first draft before revising. Learn the craft and the business. And as Stephen King says in On Writing: If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.
Q: Can I send you my story or manuscript to read?
A: I wish I could, but I don’t have time to offer feedback. I recommend joining a critique group—there’s a writing advice article on my site about finding one!
About the Books
Q: How did you come up with the idea for Poison Study?
A: From a line in Orson Scott Card’s How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy, about how real freedom in fantasy often exists outside royal power structures. That got me thinking about a food taster close to power… and the whole story spun out from there.
Q: Are you going to write more Study books about Yelena and Valek?
A: No more full novels—but I might write short stories or novella about the other characters in the world.
Q: Will there be more Healer books?
A: Nothing planned at the moment, but never say never. I said the same thing after Fire Study, and look what happened!
Q: What’s the preferred reading order for the Study/Glass/Soulfinder books?
A: Great question! You can find the full, detailed reading order here. Short answer: follow the order laid out in The Study Chronicles for the best reading experience, especially if you’re mixing in Valek’s POV books and novellas.
Q: Do you need to read the Glass books to understand the Study ones?
A: Not strictly—but there are references in the later Study books that connect to the Glass trilogy. I’d recommend it for the full experience (and because you’d be missing out on some great drama otherwise ?).
Q: Why did Opal end up with Devlen in Spy Glass?
A: I know that choice upset some readers! Devlen made horrible decisions while addicted to blood magic, but I believe in forgiveness and redemption. People can change. I based that arc on real-life recovery stories I heard in high school assemblies that stuck with me.
Q: Will any of your books be made into movies or TV?
A: I’d love that! My agent has been sending them around in LA, but no bites yet. Personally, I think the Study/Glass books would make a killer TV series—preferably with Joss Whedon at the helm. ?
Fan Info & Staying in Touch
Q: Can you do a book signing or visit my area?
A: I’d love to, but travel depends on publisher budgets, invitations, and family obligations. If I’m in your area, I’ll try to do public events—sign up for my newsletter or check the Appearances page to stay up to date.
Q: Where can I get updates and announcements?
A: I’m most active in my Facebook group (Snyder’s Soulfinders), followed by my Facebook author page and Instagram. I also have a quarterly email newsletter that includes exclusive content and announcements.
Q: What books would you recommend?
A: Check out my Goodreads profile to see what I’ve loved recently—I read across genres and post reviews regularly!
Life, Characters & Extras
Q: Do you base your characters on real people?
A: Sometimes—bits and pieces of people I know, but never an exact match. I don’t fully plan them out either; they develop as I write. For example, Valek started as a stereotypical assassin… and ended up a sculptor with a packrat obsession and dry sense of humor!
Q: Are the heroines based on you?
A: Not exactly. We might share a few traits, but they’re all way braver, smarter, and stronger than I am.
Q: Why did Kerrick hit Avry in Touch of Power?
A: That scene made readers upset, and I understand. Kerrick was desperate, grieving, and made a mistake. He never does it again, and later suffers his own share of pain. I believe in showing flawed characters who grow—and in consequences.
Q: What’s the worst part of being a published author?
A: Nasty reviews. I don’t mind fair criticism, but deliberately hurtful ones really stick with me. I’ve learned to avoid them when I can.
Q: And the best part?
A: You! My readers. I love getting emails and meeting people at events. Reader support is what keeps me going.
